Into the Light

Ephesians 5:8-14

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:

   “Wake up, sleeper,
   rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

This verse just reminded me of my baptism. The moments I spent in the water are still to this day so surreal to me. It was like I never held my breath. I felt more alive there with my head dunked in muddy lake water than ever before that moment. And in the hours and days after that, I felt invigorated, like nothing could ever dim the light God had just lit in me. But as he does, Satan has spent the nearly three years since then trying to put out that fire. He has tried to take from me the confidence of conviction that comes fresh with a meaningful baptism. I think God uses verses like this (verses about light and dark, which I am always drawn to) to remind me that His light IS inside me and I am the one allowing it to be dimmed. He wants me to shine!!
